1
What do I do after a family member is detained by ICE?

Search for them at locator.ice.gov using their country of birth and A-number, OR their full name, country of birth, and date of birth.

💡 A-number: An 8–9 digit number in most immigration documents, preceded by the letter A. May also appear on their detention wristband.

2
How do I find out where they are being held?

If detained in or near NYC, they will first be processed at a Manhattan ICE office (usually 1 day), then transferred to a detention facility — typically in New York or New Jersey.

① Arrest
② ICE Processing
③ Detention Transfer

Search: locator.ice.gov

3
Is it safe to visit them? How can I send money?
⚠️ If you have your own immigration concerns, consult an attorney before visiting a detention facility.
  • Check each facility's ID requirements and background check policy
  • Look up facility info at ice.gov/detention-facilities
  • You must be on their approved visitation list; visits on set days and times only
4
How can they get a free lawyer?
ℹ️ The U.S. government does not provide lawyers for immigrants facing deportation — but NYC does through NYIFUP.

To qualify:

  • Case is at Varick St. Immigration Court (or NJ Court for NYC residents)
  • Person does not yet have an attorney
  • It is the first hearing for this case
  • Household income is below 200% of Federal Poverty Guidelines
📞 Call MOIA: 1-800-354-0365
5
How do we find out when the first court date is?

Call the Immigration Court Information Line — automated, available in English and Spanish. You'll need their A-number.

📞 1-800-898-7180

Or look up at acis.eoir.justice.gov

6
How long will they be detained? What about bond?

Length depends on the individual case. If bond is granted but unaffordable, nonprofits may help:

7
What else should I do right now?

Write down everything you witnessed immediately with as much detail as possible. Collect any photos or physical evidence. Visit nyc.gov/knowyourrights for the most current rights information.
